Mars, named for the Roman god of war, has two tiny \nmoons-Phobos and Deimos-whose names are derived from the Greek for fear \nand panic. These Martian moons may well be captured asteroids \noriginating in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter or \nperhaps from even more distant reaches of the solar system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nThe larger moon, Phobos, is a cratered, asteroid-like object in this \nstunning color image from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Phobos orbits\n so close to Mars that gravitational tidal forces are dragging it down. \nIn 100 million years or so, Phobos likely will be shattered by stress \ncaused by the relentless tidal forces, the debris forming a decaying \nring around Mars.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This moon is doomed.
